Strange Elephantine Island Boomerangs Tour
Sun, Oct 24: Aswan, Egypt
Elephantine Island is in the middle of the Nile river in Aswan. There’s a small house with some artifacts on display including strange boomerang shaped artifacts. You can also find a large, precision made granite box that looks like a telephone booth, guard tower, or altar. Finally there is a backlot area with a partially restored building and lots of rubble.
There was lunch served on the cruise ship prior to leaving, but after 4 days of the same food on the Nile Cruise ship, albeit delicious, I needed a change. I saw a McDonalds at the dock so I ditched the ship lunch and got some good ole American fast food. Sure hit the spot.
TIP: While the ship is docked at Aswan, you can ditch the on-ship meals and walk to nearby restaurants and also shop for snacks and drinks.
Why Elephantine Island?
The two stories on name: from the shape of the island as an elephant tusk, or the more likely, the shape that resembles elephants standing in the water. Was it worth it to come here?
Sure, it’s a short and pleasant boat ride from Aswan, and there’s some unique artifacts here.
If you are curious about the Elephantine Island boomerangs, and the Australia connection, check out the Gosford Glyph at the Temple of Horus
We visited another Nile River island that had a temple, called Philae Island
